A Light Shines In The Darkness

In this piece, the true subject is the light itself. Even in the quiet stillness of this imagined old barn, light finds a way to shine—softly illuminating what’s within. The lantern, which I originally photographed hanging in a local restaurant, became the centerpiece. Everything else—the dusty window, aged timbers, and soft hay—came entirely from my imagination.

I wanted the lantern and window to appear glazed with years of dust, filtering the light while still allowing a few sparkles to shine through. The old timbers are arranged to lend authenticity and draw the eye through the composition, while the top of a hay pile catches the glow, anchoring the warmth in the scene.

This painting is meant to offer a quiet sense of peace and hope. Even in darkness, a light still shines.

Awarded 1st Place in the Northwest Iowa Regionals, this piece will go on to represent the region in the Iowa Statewide Art Competition in May.

"The overall composition and perspective in this piece is an important element. The way that the window and rafters come to an extreme point in contrast to the very horizontal lines on the lantern and such works nicely. You did a great job on the contrasting surfaces, the glass, straw, tin, and wood, etc. All of these elements help reinforce your idea of light and dark."
